Editorial Performance Notes
The scare lands on a lighting cue
R.L. Stine's ghost-story world works in the theatre when suspense, reveal, and comic release are arranged as carefully as music.
Phears needs an entrance the audience can feel before it fully sees him. Sound can announce scale; a backlight can hold the face in shadow; stillness can make the other actors’ retreat visible. Once the reveal lands, the actor modulates the danger so younger spectators remain inside the game.
Acid green, ultraviolet purple, fog, and a hard-edged gobo belong to the familiar haunted-house palette, but design does not replace rhythm. The sequence is cue, recognition, reaction, release. If the blackout comes early or the reaction comes late, the ghost loses weight.
